FacerumblrBook (and why Facebook sucks)
I work with social media alot…Not only during my personal time but I also am a social media-guru-to many business owners on how to effectively market their business online. Facebook. Twitter. Foursquare. Groupon. I consult with businesses day to day on how to use these tools to better connect with consumers.
Not until my girlfriend began to use tumblr today (i would @ her if I had the ability…but even that, i’m not sure is possible. ) did I ever give it a second thought.
I spent sometime today researching and seeing exactly what this thing is before I gave it any effort at all…and honestly…its pretty damn cool…Its twitter…just at a different angle.
Let me say this first: Facebook sucks. I can’t stand Facebook for 1,000 different reasons. Mainly because, it’s not fun…at all.
Not only that - but on a business stand point…facebook is terrible for marketing. I’ve had clients try to spend a $50.00 budget, only to have no active consumer response to ads and pull the entire plug on a young campaign completely…yes. It’s. That.Bad.
Tumblr throws the customization and personality back into social media.
MySpace took a pretty big hit…but lets not forget how AWESOME it started. It was social-and it had customization - and it had a unique element of wanting to snoop around— not to be nosey bastards and see what other people are doing (although that certainly was part of the equation as well ) but more to see how peoples site looked…and honestly…some of them we’re pretty damn cool.
It was more than just INFORMATION and GOSSIP and TEXT and THAT-DAMN-FACEBOOK-BLUE-COLOR.
You made it reflect the person you are.
You gave it the music you liked.
You shared the thoughts you wanted.
and…you…weren’t just one of the 10,000,000,0000,00000,000 people using facebook…but you had….your space.
It was fun. Then it sucked. Spam. Virus’ . Band SPAM (seriously..thanks for the invite to your Forth Worth Texas show!)
Right now, during the Facebook Apoloclypse (let’s not forget the exodus of 6 million facebook users last month) the user is the true winner.
So many young upstarts dying for us to use their service to make it a new massive phenomena.
Facebook.
Twitter.
Tumblr.
Instagram.
Path.
Uh…Whatever-Creepy-New-Social-Network-Google-Puts-Out.
They are all constantly upgrading their service to better suit the consumer’s needs. A beautiful thing.
Tumblr is extended Twitter with more personal flare. Simply put.
Do not get me started on twitter.
Twitter is not just a SOCIAL NETWORK. It is now, and will for a very long time, be a valuable tool to every person willing to use it the right way.
Twitter is out of the equation. Twitter won’t be topped. It’s a perfect site. a perfect service. with smart leadership and a huge vision thats coming true every day (you realize, a massive government upheaval was planned via twitter in the middle east…right?)
Twitter focuses on short, quick entries to appease the 20somethings 1 second or less attention span…
but their is a site for the rest of us.
Tumblr.
It has more media.
It’s a bit more interactive.
and it won’t break news (If you followed the right people on Twitter…we knew Osama was dead before CNN broke the story on screen)
But it will be a valuable resource for people who truly want to SHARE.
Not just pictures of you getting drunk.
or your stupid god damn farmville.
or you showing off your baby pictures to the people who tormented you in high school.
but people who want to share an experience.
Share some music.
Share some clips.
Share an opinion.
Share some zinggg with that theme on your page.
and just be more…unique.
Tumblr has a fatal flaw…as does every hot new social network coming our way…
it’s completely contingent on the content that it’s users create. (never a way to solve that…sorry Mr. Zuckerberg)
If we stop using Facebook, there goes that 600 kajillion IPO next year.
and if we stop using twitter…it won’t break news.
and if we all never write another entry on here, Tumblr ain’t so hot anymore.
But its different.
and its new. and its exciting.
Now i’ve got to convince those close to me to use it so I stay interested….
